Summary: The Staff Physician provides primary and urgent care and health promotion to Wake Forest University (WFU) undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to patient assessment and treatment, responsibilities include performance of some laboratory tests, supervision of non-physician clinical staff, and equal share rotation “on-call” nights and weekends. The Staff Physician works in the clinic following the academic calendar with an expectation of flexible clinic coverage during both summer sessions.
Provides and manages direct patient care including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and/or referral for students; documents in patient records ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Provides preventative and health maintenance evaluation, care, and guidance.
Assures compliance with accepted standards of confidentiality of information and documents.
Follows established departmental policies, procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
Provides training for Student Health Service (SHS) staff, medical students/residents, and campus community as assigned by Director.
Communicates with appropriate university officials concerning health and illness issues (i.e. recommendations concerning medical accommodations, adjustments of academic schedules, medical withdrawals, and readmissions) as assigned by the Director.
Participates in public health functions of the Health Service (i.e. disease notification, outbreak management, communication with campus community and media, and prevention efforts) as assigned by the Director.
Performs medical procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and manages conditions produced by infection or trauma.
Performs and/or interprets common laboratory, radiological, cardiographic, and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiological processes.
Obtains detailed and accurate medical histories from patients; performs appropriate physical examinations, delineates problems, and records the information in the patient’s electronic health record (EHR) to include proper usage of diagnosis and procedure coding.
Develops and implements patient management plans including the coordination of referrals to specialty and social services, the recording of progress notes, and the provision of continuity of care.
Counsels patients on medical and psychological problems and provides medical treatment where appropriate. Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with therapeutic regimens, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
Provides continuity of care in the management of complex illnesses and injuries. Performs evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations.
Provides clinical supervision of advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students, and physicians in training.
Serves as an advocate for students.
Participates in regional and/or national medical societies such as the Southern College Health Association and the American College Health Association.
Serves on university committees as requested.
Attends scheduled staff meetings and in-service presentations.
Participates with other SHS staff planning, projects, and programs such as health promotion, surveys, and Division of Campus Life events.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with a minimum of two years of full- or part-time primary care, urgent care, or emergency care experience.
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in North Carolina (NC) as determined by the North Carolina Medical Board including a current/valid North Carolina license, DEA certificate, and Basic Life Support (CPR) card.
Board certified with current certificate in either Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, or closely related discipline.
Demonstrated ability to perform all of the duties of a primary care physician not limited to making prompt and appropriate assessments and treatments of emergency situations and making appropriate referrals to outside consultants.
Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with staff and parents/guardians.
Significant interest in working with college students.
Ability to analyze situations and take effective action.
One year of student health experience in higher education.
Previous experience with women’s health issues.
Understanding of mental health issues in a college setting.
Responsible for own work.
Clinical supervision of advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students, and physicians in training.
