A physician extender working at the Minor Emergency Department and Vidant Beaufort Hospital Emergency Department will assess the immediate medical needs of the patient, provide direct patient care, function under stress, having a limited time period in which to elicit and document data, make an assessment, and act on it appropriately. Order and evaluate lab work, diagnostic imaging, electrocardiograms, and/or other appropriate studies necessary. Recognize normal and abnormal lab values, imaging results, and their implications, and act immediately if needed. Perform procedures competently as required by the plan of care. Communicate and consult with the attending physician as appropriate in creating a treatment plan. Record and document all findings, actions and patient instructions using appropriate medical record systems.

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. We treat more than 120,000 patients per year in a state-of-the-art ED at Vidant Medical Center. VMC is a 960+ bed level 1 trauma center and regional stroke center.
