Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Iowa State University, one of the nation’s leading land-grant institutions, seeks a proven leader to carry the pioneering vision of the nation's first public veterinary college and to hold the endowed position of Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean’s Chair in Veterinary Medicine.
The dean will be in the enviable position of leading a college that is committed to continued excellence as evidenced by investments of nearly $105 million in state-of-the-art facilities for education, research, clinical programs, and laboratories, including the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and a Biosafety Level 3 facility. As part of ISU's strong interdisciplinary culture, the members of the college collaborate on research and training programs across the university and with the USDA National Centers for Animal Health, co-located in Ames. Strategic faculty hires support strengths across the college and support for Iowa's commitment to animal and human health as well as a $10 billion state livestock industry.
The Dean will provide forward-looking planning for the education of nearly 600 DVM candidates including 50 enrolled through cooperative agreement with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The college faculty is comprised of 120 tenured/tenure track and 50 clinical track faculty, 35 residents, interns, and other faculty. In addition, nearly 180 graduate students are pursuing MS and PhD degrees.
Required Education and Experience:
The selected candidate must possess a DVM or equivalent veterinary degree and have a distinguished record in the profession that qualifies the candidate for tenure at the rank of full professor in one of the departments in the college; must have a vision for the teaching, research and outreach missions of a land-grant university, a mission that incorporates emerging trends and needs in veterinary education, research and practice; must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, including effective skills in working with individuals and groups; must have leadership experience in a complex academic, governmental, or business organization and an ability to build and sustain internal and external collaborations; and must have a demonstrated commitment to achieving and sustaining diversity.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Preferred qualifications include a PhD, board certification, and prior experience in fund raising.
The position of Dean is an administrative appointment with faculty rank as Full Professor (with tenure).
